OPEN SCIENCE AND RESEARCH LEADS TO SURPRISING DISCOVERIES AND CREATIVE INSIGHTS Welcome from Ministry of Education and Culture The NeIC 2015 Conference, 5-8. May 2015 in Espoo, Finland DIRECTOR RIITTA MAIJALA

Trends and challenges Globalization –Global market for services and skills –What is the Nordic path in global evolution? Digitalization –New ways for exploring scientific knowledge –New ways of information and knowledge exchange –Changes in current processes, activities and organizations –How to best benefit from disruptive digitalization?

Comissaire Gunther Oettinger: "Europe's future is digital" First, providing better access for consumers and businesses to digital goods and services: making sure that people use online services and digital goods across borders and that businesses face fewer barriers when they sell to other EU countries. Second, shaping the environment for digital networks and services to flourish: setting the right rules and conditions for those in the market, both traditional and newcomers. Third, creating a European Digital Economy and Society with long-term growth potential: we need a digital European market which allows new business models to flourish, start-ups to grow and industry to innovate and compete on a global scale. We urgently need to tackle the most challenging issues such as data, skills and standards, for European industry and citizens to make the most of the digital economy.

Open Science and Research Open Science and Research refers to efforts to promote open procedures in scientific research activities (verification, validation) The essential objective is that in the context set by research ethics and legal frameworks, research outputs (data, methods and publications) should be published in such a way that research can be validated and outputs generated can be re-used. research results to be usedThe research environment should promote openness (policies, infrastructures, open interfaces, open standards) for research results to be used Avointiede.fiAvointiede.fi, openscience.fiopenscience.fi

Goals of the Open Science and Research Roadmap 2014-2017* Openness and repeatability increase the reliability and quality of science and research Reinforcing the intrinsic nature of science and research Those working within the Finnish research system know how to harness the opportunities afforded by openness to boost Finland’s competitive edge Strenthening openness- related expertise Good and clear basic structures and services enable new opportunities of openness to be harnessed in a timely manner and ensure a stable basis for research Ensuring a stable foundation for the research process Open science and research creates new opportunities for researchers, decision-makers, business, public bodies and citizens Increasing the societal impact of research *Avointiede.fi*Avointiede.fi, openscience.fiopenscience.fi
