HONORING OUR BROTHER CELEBRATING DARIUS JONES
4
Gone Too Soon… Darius Jones started De La Salle as a Freshman in 2009. It was his dream come true. He had always aspired to be a Spartan and to play basketball for De La Salle. Tragically, on October 11, 2009, while playing league basketball, Darius suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrest. He died on the gym floor, in front of his Mother and coaches. He was just 15 years old. He was our Spartan Brother. Darius Jones was buried in a Spartan basketball uniform.

“I want to make sure that a parent never feels as helpless as I did that day.” – Beverly Bradley (Darius’ Mom) As a way of honoring her son and making a difference for others, Darius’ Mom Beverly Bradley, started The Darius Jones Foundation. The Foundation provides hope and preventive assistance to athletes and families that could be confronted with this same tragic situation.

WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW? Sudden Cardiac Arrest causes 325,000 deaths every year. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is also the leading cause of death in youth athletes. Without emergency help, victims of SCA can die within minutes. Defibrillators or AED devices can save lives by delivering an electric shock to restore the heart to its normal rhythm. Many states requires schools to have AEDs or defibrillators on campus. CALIFORNIA does not. De La Salle is fortunate to have 3! Most schools in our community have none!
7
WHY SHOULD WE HELP? Darius was a Freshman just like us when he died. All other classes knew him. We will never know him but can keep his memory alive and demonstrate leadership. Spartans stand together in life and in death as brothers!
