2 Overview ■5K hosted at Smother’s to raise awareness for child abuse. ■Goal: To raise money and awareness for child abuse. ■Funding needed: $686.70

3 Identified Need ■Nationally in 2013 679,000 children were abused, about 1,520 kids died (National Children’s Alliance). ■On Average in 2014 statewide in KY there were 58,114 cases of child abuse. On average 477 cases per county. Daviess County had 1,334 cases in 2014 (Prevent Child Abuse-Kentucky). 5 Project Description ■5K at Smother’s Park for child abuse awareness ■Advertisement: –Local high schools –Radio infomercial –Fliers at restaurants ■Runner Fee: –$25 for 18+ –$20 for under 18 –+$10.00 for shirt ■Registration online –(2 weeks prior) ■Race Day for runners –30 minutes early –Take the pledge –Waiver –Medals for top 10 racers ■Police and EMTs

7 Project Description Cont. Objectives: 1.Reach out to the Owensboro/Daviess county area to raise awareness for child abuse. 2.Promote child abuse awareness and get 500+ Owensboro/Daviess County citizens to pledge to speak against child abuse and to stand up for child rights. 3.Host a 5K at Smother’s Park to raise money and awareness for child abuse. 4.Donate money raised to CASA.

8 Project Description Cont. ■Target Audience: –500+ Owensboro/Daviess County citizens ■Partner Organizations: –Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)

9 Benefit ■Spread awareness to stop child abuse ■Make people more alert for cases ■Raise money for CASA ■When you let the public know how their community is affected by this then they will respond by trying to contribute to the cause (Children’s Bureau). ■Taking the Pledge can work as a form of 'pre-commitment', a psychological strategy for sticking to goals we may otherwise be tempted to give up (Centre for Effective Altruism).

10 Implementation ■Timeline: March – Planning community benefit April – Advertise race May – Final race preparation ■Student Responsibilities: –Get 4-5 people to sign up –Assist participants in the sign-in process –Help participants get their shirts
