Martin Luther Small groups have played an important part in reform movements within the church
12
Wesley’s Class System John Wesley Christian fellowship is necessary to spiritual growth of believers Method: preach simple Gospel to large crowds, then organize classes with well- trained teachers/pastors for discipling
13
Wesley’s Class System John Whitefield, a contemporary of Wesley’s Had little to show for his efforts because he had no small group system
14
8 Quality Characteristics All grouping churches worldwide share 8 basic characteristics
15
Most Important Principle The multiplication of holistic small groups is the single most important thing for maintaining health and growth
16
Preparing for 2 nd Advent Ellen White’s counsel led to small groups playing an important role in the early S.D.A church

21
SG’s for Kingdom Community Primary function is to develop relationships – People and God – People an people Building loving relationships should be the primary concern of the church
22
Church Without Walls Where relationships are the priority of the church, there can be no wall– of any kind
23
The truth is… Church organizations have their place but the PEOPLE are the church
24
The Effective Small Group is… 1. Holistic A mini-church While groups serve many different functions, Jesus must be central to everything
25
The Effective Small Group is… 2. The Basic Building Block Small groups can only reach their maximum potential if their importance is fully understood and lived out
26
The Effective Small Group is… 3. Interactive Everyone learns from everyone else The group leader is a facilitator
27
The Effective Small Group is… 4. A basic Christian Community The primary purpose of the group is to make Jesus available or accessible to: people who have not met Him before, those who have so that they can grow in their relationship with Him
28
2-Winged Bird The small group serves as a “mini-church” but it does not take the place of the larger church
29
Community Wing Small group life is not just for “church members” Pastors and administrators miss out if they are not involved
30
System for Ministry “Small groups” are not a program at all They are a divinely ordained system or structure for personal and community growth and effectiveness
31
Not Independent House Churches Every group is different By applying the Jethro principle, groups are connected with each other by a system of “leaders of leaders”
32
No Absence of Departments Departments which offer expertise for training and resourcing for ministry will always be necessary
33
SG church provides… The relationship between the larger church with its departments and the network of small groups or cells
34

35
Small Group Values: the Key to Growth” Important values, "ground-rules“ and principles which govern the life of the group
36
Going Somewhere? Jesus spoke so much about the “kingdom of heaven” but are we really seeking to live like that now?
37
Kingdom of Heaven is Like… Jesus was much more concerned with kingdom principles such as generous grace, unlimited forgiveness, justice, faithfulness, etc.
38
Our Values His way is the best Values make us what we are
39
Life-changing Energy The only source of life-transforming energy is the Holy Spirit Is there anything we can do to block or facilitate the flow of God’s Spirit in His church?
40
Values Which Drive… What are some things that are central to the Spirit's effective ministry?
41
SG people (1) and SG people (2) 1.Small groups are for ordinary people like you and me 2.God can do…
42
We’re Guilty We need to see enormous possibilities in ourselves and each other as we make ourselves available for God’s service
43
Just a Lay Member? All believers are lay people, including pastors All believers are clergy-all are called by God
44
Other Values Prayer Affirmation Availability Openness and honesty Accountability Sensitivity Confidentiality Multiplication

“The Goal of small groups: holiness and harvest” Take time to emphasize the two principle objectives of small group ministry The growth of believers toward maturity in Christ The numerical growth of the church- nurture and evangelism
56
What’s a disciple? Discipleship is a lifelong apprenticeship, learning and growing by observing the Master and doing what He asks.
57
Edification The church as the body of Christ The fact that we can all play a part in building up this mysterious living body is a wonderful thing
58
Building Community First priority was given to the growth of the believing community
59
Building Believers The body does not grow if its individual parts are not growing and functioning properly
60
Believers Grow Practice of prayer Life-application Bible study Discerning the will of God Obedience
61
The basis of deep enduring friendship 1.With the larger body of the church 2.With a small group 3.With one or two other individuals Mentoring
62
Evangelism Keep a “second Pentecost” perspective on the future growth of the church Small group membership will not necessarily be the same as Adventist church membership
63
Flexibility The key to small group success The mother church should not insist that every group follow the same program
64
Four possible “stations” 1.Membership of the church and of a small group 2.Learning to walk with Jesus in the real world 3.Identifying gifts for ministry 4.Learning how to be an effective witness

75
Have Patience Jesus’ ministry was a reflection of this principle It led to the Pentecost
76
Session Eight “Maintaining the Network”
77
“Maintaining the Network” It is good to become acquainted with the challenges of the future
78
It’s One Thing… The sooner small groups become the heart of the church, the better, because they are here to stay
79
Small Groups Are Living… How can we keep this living thing growing?
80
Multiply Leaders Every person is a leader See and realize leadership potential in every person
81
Keep it Challenging Keeping the vision clear is vital
82
Keep it Interesting Find different ways of doing the same thing The small group experience must be enjoyable
83
Difficult Decisions Confront difficult people Dis-functional groups Mistakes
84
Small Groups Should be on Fire “Without burning out”
85
Understand Change Where is a new enterprise most likely to fail? When is a new idea with great possibilities most likely to be dropped?
86
The Family Make the church a real family experience for everyone
87
Believe the Promise The idea of “the last days” or “the final events” should not fill anyone with fear or dread but hope and longing.
