 Identify components of Worker Safety Law ◦ Hazard Communication Standard  Locate Central File and list its components and uses  List labeling requirements

What is the function of this law?  what hazardous substances are located at their workplace  how to work with these hazardous substances safely  data for monitoring and tracking hazardous substances.  help emergency response personnel to plan for and respond to hazardous substance incidents

What is the function of this law?  Evaluate the hazards of Chemicals  Communicate Chemical Hazards

RTK and HCS  RTK survey – Hazardous Chemicals List  Training  Central File – MSDS, HSFS  Labeling

2 laws = 2 labels

 RTK: User of chemical/substance  HCS: Manufacturer  No chemical should be accepted from a company that does not have adequate warning labels. When in doubt return the chemical to the company or contact them for more information.

 Labels must: ◦ List the 5 most predominant ingredients ◦ Any Hazardous ingredients down to 1% ◦ Any special hazards (carcinogens) down to.1% ◦ Include CAS number ◦ Have specific Hazard warnings (ex: Avoid Skin Contact) ◦ Manufacturers name and address

 A container that is being used to temporarily transport a chemical.  This is only allowed during “continuous use”. In between periods it must be returned or labeled.

Your first stop for hazard information!

 Location: ◦ Ridge: Room 702 ◦ WAMS: Media Center  Contains: ◦ MSDS ◦ HSFS ◦ RTK Survey  Serves as Hazardous Chemical listing for HCS compliance ◦ Hazardous Substance List

1. Review MSDS’s for all hazardous substances you use – Especially on first use! 2. Use an alternate substance that is less hazardous if possible 3. Utilize protective equipment (for yourself and your students) that is appropriate for the hazard 4. Store materials appropriately and follow chemical sign-out procedures
