TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 A FR&SH Approach to Formulation Functional, Renewable & Hybrid Sustainable Materials: A TSB funded collaborative project Unilever

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 Background MARIE CURIE ACTIONS Marie Curie Host Fellowships, “Green Chemistry” ToK, MTKD-CT-2005-029644 “Greener” formulation ingredients from renewable resources. Partially oxidised, dispersed cellulose particles to thicken water based formulations.

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 Partially C(6) oxidised cellulose - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Not dissolved, but well-dispersed fibrils with surface charge; bacterial cellulose X SCMC hybrid Surfactant interactions? thixotropic gels

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 Oxidise Cellulose attributes Physico-chemical Attributes ●Excellent structuring ●Shear thinning rheology ●Very high suspension power –High inorganic loading ●Emulsion stabilisation ●Excellent skin feel (smooth) ●Less sticky and ‘dragging’ than other natural alternatives or acrylates. Sustainability ●Minimally modified ●Renewably sources ●Biodegradable ●Not food competitive Processing ●Fewer formulation ingredients ●Easily tuneable rheology –One chassis, many formulations –Different formats ●Fewer hazardous chemicals –No neutralisation

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 Dematerialisation – doing (more) with less SURFACTANTS cleaning Opportunity to save resources Cost saving to pay for new ingredient Improved environmental footprint Simplification, dematerialisation

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 TSB & CI-KTN ●TSB investment lowered the barriers to innovation by enabling the creation of a consortium with the right expertise. ●Chemistry Innovation KTN (funded by the TSB) also played a critical enabling role in the creation of this project. Without CI-KTN’s influence/input in setting the scope for the relevant call, call dissemination activities, partnering support and guidance on how best to shape the proposal, it is unlikely that this project would have been such an immediate success.

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 The Consortium Functional, Renewable & Sustainable Hybrid (FR&SH) materials TSB “Sustainable Materials” collaborative R&D project

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 FR&SH materials - key project objectives ●To demonstrate commercial feasibility of added value chemical formulation materials based on renewable feedstocks ●Production of prototype formulated personal care products ●Creation of IP Several patents filed.

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 List of prototypes made to date ●Cosmetics: –Sparkle Shimmer Gel –Anti-age serum –Skin toners –Cooling sprays ●Sun Protection: –Sun protection lotions –Trigger-sprays ●Hair care: –Hair Gel –Hair Conditioners ●Deo –Antiperspirants –Deodorants ●OTC: –Glucosamine joint care gels –(spray format) ●Skin Creams: –Day creams, night creams –Body lotions –Silicone, paraffin and paraben free –All natural preservatives ●isotropic liquids –Suspension of benefit agents –Visual cues –Viscosity build

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 OxyCel in creams ●OxyCel has been used to formulate a number of cream products: ●Mass market lotions: Vaseline Healthy White ●Luxury Creams: Ponds, Dove Spa night and day creams ●All Natural Creams: no petrochemicals ●Sunscreens: Sprayable sun- care products; in particular Sprayable non-drip creams

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 What is special about OxyCel? 1.Unusually, for a structurant, OxyCel imparts a pleasant skin feel that is soft, film-forming and totally non-sticky. 2.During application and spreading on the skin, OxyCel transforms basic emolliency and gives the perception of a premium effect. We are able to simplify emulsions and remove undesirable ingredients without compromising on the target aesthetics. 3.We believe we have distinctive and unique formulations.

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 Example of natural cream This Facial Day Cream is formulated with 100% naturally- derived components. It is designed to give luxurious emolliency without the usual stickiness and heaviness of natural products. The benefits of OxCell 1.Single hydrocolloid to stabilise the emulsion 2.Takes away the heaviness and greasiness from the natural oils 3.Ensures the emulsion is far less greasy than conventional natural creams 4.Pleasant residual after-feel with a perceivable non- sticky film 5.Predictable and reproducible rheology 6.No neutralisation step

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 Current project status Optimised technology Unilever Category- specific Products Hair Deo Skin Category Innovation Plans External companies TSB-funded part of project ended in Dec 2011, but the technology is entering its exploitation phase. Activity aimed at commercialisation of the technology continues between Unilever and Croda. Licensing

TSB Collaborative Research project # 100695 Licensing Opportunities ●We are keen for the supply chain of OxyCel to grow and the for the technology to be exploited more broadly. surinder.chahal@croda.com ●Unilever are happy to enter discussion on licensing of the technology for HPC applications. gianfranco.unali@unilever.com 0151 641 1449 0777 503 1767
