Challenges of New Ideas The church waged a war of censorship. They banned and burned books and imprisoned writers. People would meet in meetings called salons. Middle class and high class would meet and talk about Enlightenment Ideas.

Enlightened Despots Frederick the Great- Used his political power to bring school, jobs, and religious freedom to the people of Prussia. Catherine the Great- She used her political power to expand the country of Russia. Joseph II- Brought religious freedom to Austria. Also ended censorship and kept Catholic churches under strict control.

New Art and Literature Baroque- Glorified historic battles or the lives of saints. Rococo- Furniture and tapestries featured delicate shells and flowers. Music- Ballets and operas were set to new types of music. Novels- Stories of people in their times were popular.

Britain’s Rise to Power First Step- Control trade and create settlements across the world. Second Step-Win in all your wars up to this point. Third Step- Make other countries want to do business with you. Last step- Create alliances with your neighbors.

Constitutional Government Government based on documents. Tories- Older aristocrats that preserved old tradition. Whigs- Supported the new age of Enlightenment. Cabinet System- Close advisors of the ruler.

George III Reasserts Royal Power Set to restore order as the complete king. Put his friends in the seats of the cabinet. Was king when the American Revolution started.
