Fortifiers Additives These are substances added to increase the nutrient value of the food. These are substances with no nutrient value but are added to improve the appearance, flavour, texture and/or storage properties of the food. Key Word Match Up Learning Activity Residues These substances are left over chemicals in the food, that were originally used to increase productivity. E.g. pesticides, hormones, herbicides.

Try and give a balanced argument and not one that is completely one sided. Learning Activity Using page 56 in your text books, research into the three types of additives below and complete the table. Residues Residues are the remains of chemicals used to increase food production. For example, if a heard of cows are injected with chemicals to keep them healthy or prevent disease, some of those chemicals may remain in the meat of the cow when it is slaughtered for food. Meaning we consume those chemicals when we consume the meat.
8
Pesticides and Herbicides Pesticides and herbicides are toxic chemicals sprayed onto plants to kill insects and weeds. The crops can tolerate these chemicals and can absorb them. This means that when we consume the crops, we are also consuming the toxic chemicals.
9
Hormones Some animals are fed hormones, like oestrogen, to increase their growth rate. Oestrogen is a female hormone, meaning that when it is consumed by men it can cause them to develop female characteristics.
10
Grade C: Explain the term “residue”. Grade B: Give examples of two residues left over in food and explain how they get there. Grade A: Create a counter argument, around a paragraph long, against the use of herbicides. The use of pesticides has increased my yearly crop yield by 50%. I think I may start using herbicides as well to help increase my yield. Learning Activity Connectives Activity

Quick Check 1)What are pesticides? (Give 3 examples) 2)Explain the difference between pesticides and herbicides. 3)Evaluate why a food company may add fortifiers to their food. 4)Explain why additives are put into our food. 5)List the 7 nutrients. 6)Explain what rickets is. 7)Which nutrient is a primary cause of obesity? Extended Learning Activity Create 3 new questions to ask your partner all relating to the same subject. The first question should be to a grade E standard, then add an additional aspect to the question to improve the grading to a grade C. Finally, add a final aspect to the question to make it to a grade A question.

Plenary Here’s the question, what is the answer? 1)Flavouring, Colouring and preservatives. 2)These substances are added to our food to increase it’s nutritional value. 3)Residues. 4)Rickets. 5)Monosaccharides and Polysaccharides. 6)This nutrient forms part of the cell membrane. 7)Eating all 7 nutrients, in their required amount, to avoid malnutrition and to be able to carry out day to day processes.
