Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Mom, how does your phone know what the weather is going to be like? 3 Question ???

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 4 Sentinels for Copernicus Costs - €4.3bn 2014 to 2020 Benefits to the EU Economy – estimated € 30 billion (through 2030) Source: EU Copernicus

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 5 Services through Copernicus Products and services to manage and protect the environment and natural resources and ensure civil security Benefits for Europe and the international community Essential information for 6 main domains: Ocean Land Atmosphere Climate change Security Emergency response Source: EU Copernicus

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 6 Copernicus - Marine Services Marine safety Oil spill combat Ship routing Search & rescue Marine resources Analysis and forecast of hydrodynamic and ecosystem models Fish stock management Marine and coastal environment Monitoring water quality, pollution, coastal activities Seasonal and weather forecasting Short & long term Climate monitoring, ice surveys Sea Surface Temperatures Source: EU Copernicus

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 7 Where are the jelly fish? Sentinel-3 is primarily an ocean mission that will provide accurate and reliable measurements on: Sea-surface temperature Ocean colour Sea-surface height Ocean currents Facts: In the Mediterranean region, 150 000 people are treated for jellyfish stings each year In 2013, jelly fish blocked a cooling water intake, prompting a Swedish nuclear reactor to shutdown In 2007, jellyfish wiped out a salmon farm in Northern Ireland killing 100 000 fish Source: EU Copernicus Marine Service

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 8 Safer Seas Safety and reliability: ice monitoring and forecasting allows planning for safe and efficient transportation routes 800 million tones of goods are transported by ship every year in the Baltic Sea, with 40% transported during winter Cost savings: icebreaker fuel consumption reduced up to 50% transit times and costs reduced up to 2000 € per ship/day decreased cost of living for Northern communities

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 9 Land Services Objective – to provide land-cover information for environment and other terrestrial applications Data collected and analysed – wide range of biophysical parameters – state of vegetation (leaf area index), energy budget, water cycle (soil moisture index) Land maps – high resolution Forest areas Agricultural areas Wetlands Small water bodies Specific areas of interest – urban atlas, biodiversity hot spots Thermal infrared sensors – global land monitoring Innovative altimeter – advanced monitoring of water levels of rivers and lakes worldwide Source: GeoVille & TU Vienna; Based on: MetOp ASCAT

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 10 Changing lands – fast response to emergencies and disasters Numerous Applications: Land Any changes closely monitored Detecting illegal timber harvesting Agriculture: estimate crop acreage, soil moisture, forecast yields Land movement - urban planning, landslides, volcanic uplift Rapid response to disasters – floods and earthquakes Emergency Management Source: EEA/GISAT

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 11 Monitoring Construction Progress from Space timely and accurate geospatial information to monitor infrastructure construction progress. This supports authorities and civil engineers in planning and managing construction sites (including sport stadiums). The Estádio Nacional - Brasília during and after construction. The construction process was tracked by the Pléiades satellite constellation before the 9th FIFA Confederations Cup, an international football tournament held from 15 to 30 June 2013. 12 Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 12 How Satellites Track a Mass Killer The daytime land surface temperature over Africa. Land surface temperature acts directly both on the breeding cycle of mosquito as well as the development of the Plasmodium parasite. Thus, surface temperature is thought to be directly related to increased risk for malaria. Source: Processed by Dr. D. Ghent, University of Leicester, UK Prevalence of malaria in West Africa. Numerical models analyse malaria data with environmental factors such as climate, altitude, vegetation cover, agro-ecological zones which are also derived from satellite maps. Source: MARA ARMA

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 13 Copernicus – Support for Weather Predictions The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is a worldwide leading international organisation that develops and operates global models and data-assimilation systems to predict the behaviour of the atmosphere in the medium range and also up to longer periods of time by using probabilistic techniques. Every day, its powerful computing systems assimilate in near real-time over 12 millions of observation data from about 60 different satellites and from various ground networks. - sea-surface temperature over the Atlantic: blue areas - coldest & red - warmest - accuracy of a few tenths of a degree. 14 Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 14 Copernicus Emergency Management Service GIO EMS GIO EMS Timely & Accurate data – before, during and after disasters Global coverage Ground resolution, Quick data delivery, reliable info day-and-night, cloud free imagery Earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, floods, storms claim human lives and cause serious damage Rush mode – immediate response Non-rush mode – prevention, preparedness, disaster risk reduction, recovery Terrain deformation services – precise measurements and monitoring over landslides

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 15 Copernicus Support for Flood Management June 2013 – century flood in central Europe Loss > € 12 billion Copernicus Emergency Management Service (GIO-EMS) 53 reference maps 65 flood delineation maps (GE, HU, CZ) Benefits Preparation, analysis, mitigation Flood forecast modeling Risk assessment and damage evaluation Source: GeoVille Source: GIO EMS - Mapping; Background Image: WorldView-2

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org 16 How Satellites help manage humanitarian crises Timely and accurate geospatial information to support the management of humanitarian crises. 12 million refugees currently live outside their country of origin 20 to 25 million people have been forcibly displaced within their own country In 2010, the global economic cost of humanitarian crises was estimated at approximately € 100 billion Benefits provide up-to-date, accurate geographic information for logistics, water supply infrastructures, demography, health facilities and the environment help to identify priority areas for receiving humanitarian and financial aid provide essential geographic information for remote areas where this is absent or not current Source: European Commission

Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment. Operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide (USA, Korea, Africa). 27 Case study: EUMETSAT
