Toltecs Native American civilization which settled in Southeastern Mexico, and whose economy focused on mining and trade between the 8 th and 12 th centuries.

Aztecs Native American culture which thrived in the region of Central Mexico; the civilization was conquered in 1521 by Hernán Cortés (a Spanish Conquistador).

Montezuma II The last emperor of the Aztec Empire (1466- 1520) who was defeated by the Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés in 1520.

Spanish Conquest The period of Spanish exploration, settlement, and exploitation of Native American civilizations in the Americas during the 16 th and 17 th centuries.

Hernán Cortés Spanish Conquistador who conquered the Aztec civilization in 1521 by capturing the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlan and settling Mexico.

oligarchy A form of government in which power is concentrated in the hands of a few persons or in a dominant class; In Latin America, the nations of Nicaragua, Bolivia, Chile, Panama, and Argentina have historically been ruled by elite groups.
