MATTER COMBINES TO FORM DIFFERENT SUBSTANCES
2
MATTER CAN BE PURE OR MIXED CAN BE PURE (made up of only one type of atom) CAN BE MIXED (made up of two or more substances) MOST SUBSTANCES ARE MIXED PURE MATTER: ELEMENTS MIXED MATTER: COMPOUNDS AND MIXTURES
3
Matter can be pure, such as an element (gold), or a compound (water)
4
Matter can be a mixture. Mixtures contain two or more pure substances.
5
ELEMENTS Pure substance A substance that can’t be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary chemical changes Contains only a single type of atom It doesn’t matter how many atoms it contains as long as all of the atoms are the same type More than 100 elements
6
COMPOUNDS A substance that consists of two or more different types of atoms bonded together to form a new substance Can only be separated by breaking the bonds between the atoms
7
MIXTURES A combination of different substances that remain the same individual substances and can be separated by physical means Most matter around you is a mixture of different substances Examples of mixtures: fruit salad, salad dressing
8
2 TYPES OF MIXTURES HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE: when two or more substances do not mix evenly or thoroughly (example – soil) HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE: a mixture in which different materials are blended evenly so that the mixture is the same throughout (example – sugar water, homogenized milk)
