Tuesday May 5 Objective: Calculate the concentration of any solution. Checkpoint: Classify the following as a solution, colloid, or suspension (heterogeneous mixture) Homework: -Molarity worksheet (due end of class Wed/Thurs) AB CDE
2
Absolute Zero Lab 1 week late X axis (temperature in K) Y axis (pressure in torr) Different pressures
4
Solution A homogenous mixture of two or more substances in a single phase. Everything is mixed and has the same composition and properties throughout.
5
Suspensions / Heterogenous Mixtures NOT a solution Particles are so large that they settle out unless stirred constantly. Can usually be separated through a filter
6
Colloids Particles are not large enough to settle out but large enough to scatter light. Cannot be separated by a filter
7
Yescolloid syrup water No heterogeneous mixture n/a n/a Yessolution copper water nitrate Yessolution salt water Yescolloid milk water Yessolution sugar water No heterogeneous mixture n/a n/a Yes solution ethanol water
9
Concentration High concentration Medium concentration Low concentration 1 M 0.5 M 0.25 M Write your own definition for concentration
10
Molarity= amount of solute (mol) Volume of solvent (L) (concentration) M = mol L
11
Example 1 If you dissolve 3.0 moles of NaCl in 6.00 L of water, what is the concentration of the solution? mol L M M = 3.0 mol 6.0 L = 0.5 M
12
You have 0.8 L of a 0.5 M HCl solution. How many moles of HCl does this solution contain? Example 2 mol L M 0.5 = mol 0.8 L = mol = 0.5 x 0.8 0.40 mol
13
You have 3.5 L of solution that contains 90.0g NaCl. What is the molarity of the solution? Example 3 L M
14
How many grams of KOH do you need to make 500.0 mL of a 0.25 M solution? Example 4 M
