I see the blur of green grass below my galloping hooves. I see the tawny tangled mane in front of me brandishing in the wind. I hear the rhythmic huff huff as air escapes my throat. I hear the thunder my beating hooves make as they pound the hard ground. I taste the saltiness of my sweat as it drips into my huffing mouth. I taste the freedom of running unharnessed. I touch the heart of my fellow horses when I set us free. I touch the sweet path that leads us to our future of unrestricted freedom. I smell the fear my fellow horses have of potential capture. I smell the sharp, natural greenness of our new life. I feel like a Pegasus—flying free. FLYING FREE example

Theme: This poem is told from the perspective of a horse who has just escaped captivity. It illustrates the uncontained spirit of a creature who has lived his life restrained. The speaker is able to release himself and the others into the wild, enabling all to feel free. Overall, the poem celebrates the right to actively choose your destiny. example
