3 Introduction Since the early 1990’s Victorian Parliament has passed laws to make sure potentially dangerous prisoners remained under supervision after their sentence had finished. The Serious Sex Offenders (Detention and Supervision) Act 2009 came into effect 2010 This has 2 specific purposes 1.Protect the Community by supervision or ongoing detention of a sex offender 2.Treatment and rehabilitation of the sex offender

4 Detention Orders These require sex offenders still an unacceptable risk to continue to be detained after their release date This can be done by the DPP applyinig to the Supreme Court before the release date This can be extended for 3 years and further renewed for periods of 3 years The parole board has a Detention and Supervision Order Division who reviews and monitors these

5 Supervision Orders Supervision Orders provide for the post-sentence supervision of serious sex offenders who pose an unacceptable risk of committing a relevant offence if a supervision order is not made and the offender is in the community. Imposed by the Secretary of the Department of Justice through the County or Supreme Courts Can be made up to 15 years Restrictions in freedoms are imposed. (supervision, electronic monitoring, where they live & work, curfews etc)
