Playing Along the Danger Line: Women in the 1920s By: Rosemary Aguilar, Sharon Garcia, Carolina Konarski, Ailin Mendoza, Kayla Sohl & Gabriela Valdivia

feminism “flirting, kissing, viewing life lightly, saying damn without a blush, playing along the danger line in an immature way – a sort of mental baby vamp.” (52 Rowbotham)

Crazy party culture “the 1920s flapper frantically dancing and experimenting with sex was partly a chimera created by the media. The new independent woman appears lighting up lucky strike cigarettes or triumphantly riding the waves in a Coca-Cola advertisement of 1923.” (53 Rowbotham)

Openness of sexuality “if they acknowledged their sexuality and sensuality,” for this simply got them branded in racist terms as “primitive and exotic creatures.” (53 Rowbotham)

Lack of expression “I would like you to think of my interests. That is your primary concern, because I am the one to steer the course, the pilot.” (52 Rowbotham)

central claim Women had to change their image to gain respect; however when they showed any of their sexuality, they were criticized. “Bessie, however, did throw herself into the debates about race, politics, and culture.” (54 Rowbotham) “Bessie and Sadie Delany were always conscious that they were being watched and judged by whites as representatives of the young black intelligentsia.” (54 Rowbotham)
