Create a pros and cons list to assess implications and benefits. *Remember not making a decision is just as much a decision as deciding on your next steps. Most important step. 9 Chapter 4: Goal Setting and Planning 8 A goal that is specific has a much greater chance of being accomplished. Create a concrete criteria for measuring progress. Make sure goals are realistic and achievable. Each goal should list something you want or want to do that is meaningful in your life and related to lifetime goals. Create a realistic target date for short-term and long-term goals.

I want to be a Certified Public Accountant so I must earn a bachelor’s degree. I want to transfer to SDSU in two years and take three years to complete my upper division requirements to earn a bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

This semester I will turn in all required work and study for all of my classes one hour per week. I need a high GPA in order to transfer to SDSU. I have until end of fall semester (December) to improve my grades.

13 Goals Mentor: Informational Interviews Chapter 4: Goal Setting and Planning 12 Six Steps to Informational Interviewing Step 1: Research career fields Do some initial research on your chosen career field in terms of education, certification, and career pathway. This will help to make the most of your time. Step 2: Identify people to interview Share with friends and family your areas of interest for assistance with identifying professionals, visit local career center for workshops and expo in related career fields. Call organizations directly related to your career field of interest.

Step 4: Initiate contact Develop a professional email or voice mail which includes an abbreviated introduction to yourself. Ask for a convenient 20-30 minute appointment. Be ready to ask questions if professional is available for interview during initial contact.

Step 6: Follow up Send a thank-you email or voicemail one to two days after interview. Professional networking is key to career success.

21 Chapter Summary Chapter 4: Goal Setting and Planning 20 You will make many decisions each day throughout your life and it is important to know how to prioritize information. Some decisions relate to long-term goals and plans and are worthy of additional self-reflection, research, and decision-making processes. Sometimes, for reasons within or beyond your control, plans will need to change. So it is important to know how to adapt.
