3 Statistics in Women Women are much more likely than men to develop an eating disorder 20% of people suffering from anorexia will prematurely die from complications related to their eating disorder, including suicide and heart problems 69% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of a perfect body shape 47% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported wanting to lose weight because of magazine pictures

4 Statistics in Men An estimated 10-15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are male. Men are less likely to seek treatment for eating disorders because of the perception that they are “women’s diseases.” Among gay men, nearly 14% appeared to suffer from bulimia and over 20% appeared to be anorexic

5 Anorexia- is an eating disorder characterized by immoderate food restriction, inappropriate eating habits or rituals, obsession with having a thin figure, and an irrational fear of weight gain, as well as a distorted body self-perception Bulimia- is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating and purging, or consuming a large amount of food in a short amount of time followed by an attempt to rid oneself of the food consumed (purging), typically by vomiting, taking a laxative, diuretic, or stimulant, and/or excessive exercise, because of an extensive concern for body weight.

8  A person with anorexia constantly thinks about food – how many calories, how many fat grams, how much exercise is needed if you eat a cookie?  When a person with anorexia looks into a mirror he/she does not often see an accurate reflection.  Many individuals with anorexia will severely restrict their calories sometimes taking in only a few hundred calories a day or just water

10 Bulimia Known as Binge Eating A binge may or may not be planned. The person feels like they have no control over it. The binge generally lasts until the individual is uncomfortable or painfully full.

11 Common triggers for a Binge  Interpersonal stressors  Intense hunger after intense dieting or fasting  Feelings related to weight, body shape, and food are common triggers for binge eating. Binge eating is kept secret, they usually feel ashamed after binge eating

12 Bulimia usually onsets later in life. Able to maintain a normal weight Seven symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa: 1.Preoccupation with food. 2.Binge eating, usually in secret. 3.Vomiting after bingeing. 4.Abuse of laxatives, diuretics, diet pills. 5.Denial of hunger or drugs to induce vomiting. 6.Compulsive exercise. 7.Swollen salivary glands. 8.Broken blood vessels in the eyes.
