2  In life, people form groups (or possibly gangs). What is the purpose of joining a particular group (or even) a gang?  Breifly, summarize the message of the political cartoonist. What era in history is being illustrated?

3  For today’s opening lesson on WWI, let’s focus on the following theme: › Nationalism drives countries to war.

4  Malaysians protect their babies from disease by bathing them in beer.  In 1978m Camel cigarettes contained minute particles of real camels.  A women’s heat beats faster than a man’s.  To escape the grip of a crocodiles jaws, push your thumbs into its eyeballs, it will let you go instantly.

5  As Western (European) nations established factories (industrial revolution), each country wanted numerous amounts of natural resources to produce in factories.  European nations set up colonies around the world (imperialism) to ship natural resources back to the mother country. › European influence has spread around the world  European nations will compete to build vast colonial empires, which will lead to hostility.

7  Nationalism – pride in one’s country › European nations desired to show that they were a superior, world power. › Nationalism had spread previously spread through Germany and France, and was now filtering to all European nations.  Austria – Hungary had taken over Bosnia and Herzegovina, and due to nationalism, they wanted their own country.

9  Imperialism – competition to have colonies to provide natural resources for the mother country to produce in factories. › Colonies will provide men to fight for European armies and markets to sell goods.  Alliances – defense agreements among nations that stated if one nation was attacked, others would provide military support. › As tensions rose among European countries, two alliances will form:  Triple Alliance: Italy, Austria, Germany.  Triple Entente: France, Great Britain, Russia, Serbia.

11  Militarism – glorification of war and the military › European nations built armies to show their strength and to place fear into their enemies.  The SPARK › June 28, 1914, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the Austro – Hungarian throne, visited Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia.  During a parade, he and his wife were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a member a Serbian gang called the Black Hand.

13  There is actually a rare condition called exploding head syndrome.  The flushing toilet was invented in 1596, not by Thomas Crapper as most people think, but by Sir John Harrington.  John F. Kennedy was buried without his brain after is was lost during his autopsy.  Men can read smaller print than, women can hear better.

14  Following the assassination of Francis Ferdinand, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany encouraged Austria – Hungry to take action against the country of Serbia.  On July 23, 1914 Austria – Hungry issues Serbia an ultimatum (set of final consequences that must be accepted to avoid severe consequences). › The ultimatum had wasn’t reasonable so Serbia rejected it. › On July 28, Austria – Hungary declares war on Serbia (WWI has now begun!!)

15  Honoring their alliance, Russia began to mobilize a massive army in defense of Serbia.  To honor their alliance, Germany began to mobilize their army in reaction to Russia to protect Austria – Hungary. › By August 1 st, Germany will declare war on Russia due to their mobilization.  France reacts to Germany’s aggression and mobilizes to assist Russia and to defend themselves.  On August 3 rd 1914, Germany declares war on France.
