1
Atoms and Elements What is the difference?
2
Pure Substance Only one type of particle Can’t be separated by physical changes Examples: Pure WaterGold
3
Elements All particles have the same number of protons 1 type of particle All particles have identical properties Examples: Sulfur
4
Atoms Smallest particle of an element that has the same properties as the element Building block of all larger particles. Example: A Single Copper atom
5
Diatomic Elements These do not exist unbound in most situations Made entirely of gasses There are 7: H, N, O, F, Br, I, Cl
6
Compounds Made of two or more elements chemically bound to each other. Most things in our daily lives are made of compounds. Dry Ice (CO2)Ferrofluid
7
Ionic Compounds Usually will have a metal and nonmetal bonded to each other Usually dissolve easily in water Salt (NaCl)Potassium Chromate (KCrO 4 )
8
Molecules Usually are made of non-metals bonded to each other Most Chemicals in our body are made of molecules DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) Enzyme
9
Compare and contrast Turn your paper over. Write a total of five characteristics of atoms, elements and compounds/molecules on the back of your sheet.
