21
Labor vs. Delivery Labor is the process by which the baby gradually moves out of the uterus into the vagina to be born Delivery is the birth itself
22
Who Will Deliver the Baby? Obstetrician- specialize in pre and postnatal care of the mother and the baby Family Doctors-deliver babies and give pre and postnatal care Nurse-midwife-a registered nurse with advanced training in the care of normal, uncomplicated pregnancy and birth Lay-midwife- Same as nurse-midwife but does not have a nursing degree
23
Worksheet Complete “How would each affect labor?”
24
Stages of Labor When labor actually being, it progresses through three stages
25
Stages of Labor- First Stage Contractions open the cervix Ordinarily, the cervix is nearly completely closed, but during the first stage of labor, the cervix dilates, or widens, to form an opening about 10 cm (or 4 inches) in diameter. As labor progresses, the contractions get longer, stronger, and closer together
26
Stages of Labor- Second Stage Once the cervix is completely dilated and the baby’s head has slipped out of the uterus into the vagina, the second stage has begun Contractions no longer stretch the cervix open, as they do in the first stage, instead they work to move the baby down through the pelvis and out the vagina
27
Complications during the Second Stage Before a c-section takes place, an obstetrician will try vacuum extraction and/or forceps
28
Third Stage of Labor The uterus gives birth to the placenta Contractions start and they help the placenta separate from the wall of the uterus This stage may be brief as two minutes, or it may last half an hour After the placenta is delivered, the birth is complete
29
Cesarean Birth Not all births progress through these three stages of labor. If complications arise during the pregnancy or during labor, a cesarean birth-delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen-may be necessary
30
Examining the Newborn Doctors use the Apgar scale, a method of evaluating a newborn’s physical condition A score of 6 to 10 is considered normal
