A deeper look into the various viewpoints that try to explain behavior

 Focuses on how the physical body and brain creates our emotions, memories and sensory experiences If you could not remember the names of your parents and went to a psychologist who adheres to the biological perspective, what might he/she say?

 Focuses on our OBSERVABLE behaviors  Only cares about the behaviors that impair our living and attempts to change them If you bit your fingernails when you were nervous, a behaviorist would not focus on calming you down, but would focus on how to stop you from biting your nails.

 Fathered by Sigmund Freud  Our behavior comes from unconscious drives  Usually stemming from our childhood What might a psychoanalyst say is the reason someone always needs to be chewing gum?

 Focuses on how we think (or encode information)  How do we see the world?  How did we learn to respond to sad or happy events?  Cognitive therapists attempt to change the way you think. Boy meets girlGets rejected by girl Did he get bogged down by negative thoughts? Or did he think it was her loss?

 Focuses on Darwinism  We behave the way we do because we inherited those behaviors.  Thus, those behaviors must have helped our ancestors survive in some way. How could this behavior have ensured Homer’s ancestors’ survival?

 Focuses on positive growth  Attempt to seek self-actualization  Therapists use active listening and unconditional positive regard. “Won’t you be my neighbor?” Mr. Rogers would have made a great humanistic therapist!

 Focuses on how your culture affects your behavior Even in the same high school, behaviors can change in accordance with the various subcultures.

 With your group members, you will be assigned one of the psychological perspectives. For the next five minutes, you will consider how a psychologist from your perspective would approach the issue of love. Write down three questions that a psychologist from your perspective might ask to get a better understanding.

 We considered love when we were discussing the cognitive perspective.  What are three questions that a cognitive psychologist might ask?  Remember: Cognitive psychologists believe in the importance of thinking and problem- solving. Boy meets girlGets rejected by girl Did he get bogged down by negative thoughts? Or did he think it was her loss?

 1. How is thinking different when a person is in love?  2. How might loving someone change the way that we interpret that person’s actions?  3. Does love change the way that we choose to accept others’ opinions?
