The War in the South General Charles Cornwallis led the British campaign in the south Battle of Charleston- British won (with help of Slaves) and took more than 5,000 prisoners of war- May 12, 1780 Battle of Camden(South Carolina)- Patriots led by Horatio Gates Thought he had twice as many troops then he did- troops were poorly nourished and exhausted- fed them large amounts of molasses and cornmeal- made them very sick When fight started- most Americans retreated-only 700 of the 4,100 American troops made it to safety

Victory at Yorktown Virginia- the last battle Benedict Arnold- turned on the Americans- angry how the Continental Congress treated him- became known as a Traitor Americans waiting for the French Fleet to arrive The French fleet and Patriots surrounded Cornwallis’s army with at least 16,000 soldiers Cornwallis surrenders

The Treaty of Paris 1783 (#2) After the American win at Yorktown, the Patriots had captured the largest British force on the continent. Second Continental Congress created a series of peace negotiations with the British Took almost 2 year to work out treaty What did it do: –Established British recognition of the United States of America –Laid out new nations borders- the great lakes to the north, the Mississippi river to the west and 31 degrees latitude to the south (a separate treaty gave Florida back to Spain) –British formally excepted Americans rights to settle and trade west of the original colonies-led to movement to the frontier
