Real World Experiences through Simulation Elizabeth Mahaffey, PhD, RN Alaina Herrington, MSN, RN, CHSE, CNOR

What is Simulation? Students are engaged through participation, observation, and debriefing while being in a safe environment. Simulation expansion into healthcare is as a result of the shortage of clinical site accessibility, low census in clinical areas, and nursing faculty shortage (Jeffries, 2008). Through a simulation laboratory, students can transfer classroom information into hands-on clinical practices.

Purpose The purpose is to establish and operate a simulation center at Hinds Community College, which will provide interactive educational opportunities and services for students and the community through a realistic healthcare environment with a focus on inter-professional education, state-of-the art technology, leadership, and community service.

How to Build a Simulation Program? Assessment and Planning Braided Funding Staff and Staff Development

How to Sustain a Simulation Program?

Detailed Project Plan Strategic Goal 1: Create learning environment which reproduces clinical experiences. Strategic Goal 2: Provide educational and evaluative simulations which support research into design and curriculum.

Strategic Goal 1: Establish Learning Environment Develop/order inventory of equipment and supplies. 1.Conduct a needs assessment for desired equipment and supplies. 2.Establish/setup inventory and management system with resources and students.

Med/Surg (mostly ran)$890.15 Baby$731.25 Post Partum Hemorrhage$745.27 Vaginal Delivery$772.67 Preeclampsia$776.77

Cont. Goal 1 Develop center protocols to ensure effective communication, efficiency, and best practice standards. 1.Visit surrounding labs. 2.Draft center protocols from SSH Accreditation Standards and INACSL Best Practices. 3.Develop master calendar

Strategic Goal 2: Provide Educational and Evaluative Simulations. 1. Train faculty (Orientation Course/Sim Experts) a. Introduction of simulation through online modules b. Hands on learning class 2. Conduct assessment of learning needs 3. Provide faculty with scenario template 4. Program scenario per template instructions 5. Meet with faculty to finalize scenario

Cont. Goal 2 Implement an instructor and student satisfaction survey and self proficiency assessments.

How to Integrate a Simulation Program?

Example: Telemedicine Scenario Objectives: 1.Communicate with client in a manner that illustrates caring for his/her overall well-being. 2.Assess knowledge of dietary recommendations related to disease process.

Learner Levels What is the student’s learning level? What are the concepts that we sought to achieve?
