2 Content area: Social Studies Grade level: 2 Summary: The student will first review the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner and the history of the famous anthem. Next, the student will be given three multiple choice questions that will challenge their knowledge of the subject. Objective: Given a review of the lyrics to the star-spangled banner and instructions as to why it is important to know, the student will fill in the correct blanks with 100% accuracy. Standard: 2.21 Recite and analyze the lyrics of “The Star Spangled Banner” to determine the meaning of the song and its origins in the War of 1812.

3 INSTRUCTION "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombing of Fort McHenry by British ships in the War of 1812.The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith.

4 INSTRUCTION The lyrics to the song are as followed: Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
