5 WHAT IS AZELLA? AzELLA Arizona English Language Learner Assessment Aligned to ELP standards Assesses English language proficiency Determines entry for and exit from ELL program services Five different test levels/stages Four domains assessed: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking

6 AZELLA TEST PURPOSE Placement Test Identify students who need English language services Appropriate instructional classroom placement for the current school year Reassessment Test Progress of English language acquisition Appropriate instructional classroom placement for the following school year

8 WHO TAKES THE AZELLA REASSESSMENT TEST?

9 STUDENTS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE AZELLA REASSESSMENT Students receiving ELL services Students with a Parent Withdrawal Form, who have not yet received an Overall Proficiency Level score of Proficient according to the student’s SDELL 70 Report on the Common Logon

11 STAGE I - KINDERGARTEN Beginning Spring 2015, Only kindergarten students who qualify for ELL services will participate in the Spring AZELLA Reassessment. Which kindergarten students need to be reassessed in Spring?

23 PRE-ADMINISTRATION PREPARATION

24 PRE-ID LABELS ADE will provide Pre-ID Labels for students expected to participate in the Spring AZELLA Reassessment based on ELL enrollment in SAIS as of November. The following criteria determines which students get a Pre-ID Label: Students identified as having an ELL need Students withdrawn from ELL services by parent request Pre-ID Label Not all students who need to be reassessed will receive a Pre-ID Label.

25 STUDENT DEMOGRAPHIC DATA Use leading zeroes for SAIS IDs fewer than 8 digits Name and birth date MUST match what appears on your test list TAD For students without a Pre-ID Label, complete the demographic data information on the back of the Test Books (Stages I and II) or Answer Documents (Stages III-V) Student grade must be filled in Student PERM ID must be filled in for EVERY student

27 ADMINISTRATION ORDER AND TIMES One-Day Test Administration –Two-Days Test Administration The test, one-day or two-days administration, must be administered in the following order: Session 1: Listening Session 2: Reading Session 3: Writing Session 4: Speaking Session 1: Listening Session 2: Reading Session 3: Writing Session 4: Speaking Breaks must be provided between sessions. Students must be allowed to complete the test. Day 1 Day 2 Day 1 TAD

29 PREPARING TESTING ROOM A comfortable environment Quiet and distraction-free No visual aids visible TAD

30 UNIVERSAL TEST ADMINISTRATION CONDITIONS Small group or 1-on-1 testing, or testing in a separate location Seating location or sitting at special furniture A familiar Test Administrator Special pencil or grip Glasses, magnification, color overlays, and special lighting Hearing aid and amplification devices Wearing noise buffers after the scripted directions have been read (for the Reading and Writing sections) Repeat of scripted directions Answering questions about scripted directions TAD

31 MONITOR STUDENT TESTING Test Administrators and Proctors should: Supervise the room at all times Answer student questions that pertain only to the clarification of test administration directions Verify that students are marking their answers or writing their responses in the proper locations TAD

32 Current AZELLA materials only TESTING PRECAUTIONS TAD Keep Answer Documents intact Graphite-based No. 2 pencils only No correction fluid Do not return contaminated materials Do not allow students to mark on the timing marks No loose paper in Answer Documents No glue, sticky notes, tape, or staples No photocopies

33 UNACCEPTABLE RESOURCES No personal electronic devices! TAD Remove unacceptable devices if observed and allow testing to continue.

34 STUDENTS WHO HAVE TO LEAVE May only leave one-at-a-time Test materials must be collected upon exit Must be allowed to finish testing upon return TAD

35 DISRUPTIVE STUDENTS TAD Disrupts testing Refuses to participate Receives help from others Unacceptable classroom behavior Separate the disruptive student and, if at all possible, allow him or her to continue testing in a different location.

48 TESTING SESSION 4 – SPEAKING TAD Tips for a Successful Speaking Test Students should: Leave the telephone alone Refrain from making unnecessary noises Remain still during the test Speak in a clear voice Test Administrators should: Remain quiet during the test Use hand gestures to communicate with the student

49 RETAKING THE SPEAKING TEST In the rare occurrence that the call is interrupted due to technical issues, fire alarms, or other emergencies, students may retake the Speaking test. If something disrupts the testing:  Hang up  Call the testing phone number  Enter the lithocode  Begin the test over again TAD

50 REUSING A LITHOCODE Feb. 28, 2015 Ms. Smith  Date and time interruption occurred 2/28 1:35 pm DS 3/5 Do NOT mark or write in the blue area or over the black marks on the edges! If the Speaking Test is interrupted, document the following:  New date of Speaking Test administered  Test Administrator’s initials  The nature of the interruption – announcements went off

58 BEFORE RETURNING TESTS Sort tests by grade/teacher/last name Make sure all demographic info is filled out for every student that does not have a Pre-ID label Make sure Perm ID is filled out for EVERY student Check bubbling in all tests Make sure every section of the test is completed Check for and erase any stray marks on tests Tests missing demographic info and not checked for stray marks will be returned to the school for correction
