WP2 Data Products generation – P35 "For a general overview, data on contaminants (antifoulants, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides & biocides, radionuclides) are grouped regardless of sediment grain size, of Mytilus species and size classes, of measurement units, of phase (dissolved/particulate), of analytical and normalization protocols adopted. Specific information is linked to the data. Visualizations may not be directly comparable".   EMODnet Chemistry 2 – Third year plenary meeting, 8-9 June 2016

WP3 QA/QC - Validation - MSFD interaction WP5 Analyses and Recommendations ISPRA and OGS will give specific presentations on the surveys circulated ICES will present analysis and recommendations Three EMODnet-MSFD Coordination Meetings took place in Bruxelles to better coordinate EMODnet activities with MSFD requirements and formulate requirements on products, metadata and QA/QC procedures. Meetings with BSC and UNEP-MAP to find synergies and integration. EMODnet Chemistry may provide maximum impact on MSFD reporting on the Mediterranean and Black Sea 2 nd Expert WS took place in Oostende, 21 st October 2015, back to back with the first EMODnet Open Conference EMODnet Chemistry supports access to data and data products used for MSFD assessments and monitoring EMODnet Chemistry 2 – Third year plenary meeting, 8-9 June 2016

WP4 Portal development and operation

Strengths: Improved spatial & temporal coverage of chemical data (especially eutrophication) for all EU basins (ur-EMODnet vs EMODnet) Regional aggregated and validated data buffers for nutrients (interest by RSC) Harmonised Data products on eutrophication covering all EU basins Sharing of practices (QA/QC, DIVA,…) for increased harmonization at EU level Increased connections with MSFD and Marine Conventions (MoU) Raised awareness of the complexity and need of harmonization at EU level First example of aggregated and harmonized contaminant dataset at EU scale EMODnet Chemistry 2 – Third year plenary meeting, 8-9 June 2016 Strength Weakness Opportunities Threat - analysis

Weaknesses Several issues on ODV data format Very large set of parameters which need specific expertise to be handled Need to increase dialogue with chemical experts (contaminants) Data aggregation and validation very time consuming For data product: very heterogeneous possible end-users, need to better understand who needs what Limited visibility of data managed in comparison with large content User-friendliness of services Not easy browsing in Data Access service for long lists Synchronization between EMODnet distributed data infrastructure and regional buffers EMODnet Chemistry 2 – Third year plenary meeting, 8-9 June 2016

Strength Weakness Opportunities Threat - analysis Opportunities Integration of contaminant data revealed high heterogeneity in data collection, useful as knowledge base for policy makers Contaminant data management revealed gaps in common standards and needs for harmonization, possibility to better tune further steps Synergy with other EU initiatives (Data Ingestion, ActionMed, AtlantOS, …) New calls focused on gaps (eg. ADRION in Adriatic – Ionian area focused on contaminants) Strengthen dialogue with Marine Conventions EMODnet Chemistry 2 – Third year plenary meeting, 8-9 June 2016

Strength Weakness Opportunities Threat - analysis Threats Very (too?) ambitious objectives (EU harmonised products for contaminants) Large effort in highly heterogeneous chemical data management is underestimated EMODnet Chemistry 2 – Third year plenary meeting, 8-9 June 2016
