Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.Title 1 Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies IASS in Potsdam GEIA Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOC) Emissions Working Group WG Chair: Erika von Schneidemesser, IASS (erika.vons@iass-potsdam.de) GEIA SSC Member: Hugo Denier van der Gon, TNO

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.Title 2 Plans  GEIA’s NMVOC Emissions Working Group is coordinating efforts on the evaluation and improvement of the representation of non- methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) in emission inventories, including speciation, sector contributions, and total emissions.  The WG aims to connect existing efforts and provide added value through collaboration. This includes linking different types of activities, such as measurements and modeling with the evaluation and improvement of emission inventories. The main focus areas are:  NMVOC speciation  Absolute emissions of NMVOCs, including relative contributions of the different sectors  Regional characteristics of NMVOC emissions

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.Title 3 Shao Min Stephane Sauvage David Simpson Sverre Solberg Domenico Taraborrelli Carsten Warneke Christine Wiedinmyer Erika von Schneidemesser (Chair) Hugo Denier van der Gon (SSC member) Agnes Borbon Greg Frost Jessica Gilman Claire Granier Birgit Hassler Greet Maenhout Brian McDonald Johan Mellqvist People Open to whoever wants to join!

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.Title 4 Activities Measurements:  Evaluation of NMVOC emissions from oil and gas, specifically shale basins, US and European focus  Measurements of total NMVOC emissions in urban areas, industrial areas (refineries, shipping/ports) used to constrain EI information  North America (LA), Europe, Eastern Mediterranean  Measurement of urban source speciation/profiles (motor vehicles, solvents, etc)  Measurement of NMVOC emissions from wildfires and open burning (EFs, chamber studies, aircraft campaigns)  Comparison of measurement and EI information across urban areas using ratios  Evaluation of trends in NMVOCs (also compared to trends in VOC emissions)

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.Title 5 Activities cont. Modeling:  Evaluation of impact of speciation and total NMVOC emissions on modeled air quality based on measurement information (speciation of solvent sector; total emissions from ports/industry and agriculture)  Evaluation of lumping schemes, importance of ‚new‘ species  Chemical mechanism development/improvement for global models with a focus on VOC speciation EI evaluation/updates:  Evaluation and comparison of various EI datasets, considering different world regions, etc. Harmonization?  Upgrading NMVOC speciation in inventories (solvents, petrol stations, evaporative emissions)

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.Title 6 Conclusions/Future Steps  New WG - First telecon Initial suggestions:  Broader analysis/assessment/stock taking linked with agenda setting for priorities going forward  Possible focus – urban areas  Meta-assessment of measurement-EI evaluations  Targeted workshop to bring the community together to make progress on a specific NMVOC EI issues (e.g. Harmonize disparate data? Speciation recommendations? SVOC?) NMVOC WG will meet over lunch on Thursday – all are welcome to join!

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.Title 7 Thanks! erika.vons@iass-potsdam.de NMVOC WG will meet over lunch on Thursday – all are welcome to join!
