GENERAL RISK ASSESSMENT Managing H&S at Work Regulations 1992 Every employer shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of risk to the H&S of employees whilst at work or persons not in employment affected by their undertaking “SIX PACK” 1

RISK 6 RISK is the likelihood and severity of a hazard affecting people, the environment, premises and equipment
7
HAZARD and RISK Risk assessment requires you to know hazard & risk HAZARD is something with the potential to cause harm RISK is the likelihood that harm with occur RISK = HAZARD x EXPOSURE 7
8
THE NEED TO ASSESS HAZARD AND RISK Potassium dichromate and flour examples in notes Can a high hazard substance like potassium dichromate pose a low risk? Can a low hazard substance like flour pose a high risk? 8

ORGANISATIONAL 19 https://psychosocialhazard.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/ist2_1935044_angry_boss_employee1.jpg?w=604 Anything in the workplace that may cause harm by putting people under stress
20
How many hazards can you find? 20
21
HAZARDS IN THE LAB Look around and identify any hazards in the lab 21
22
RISK CONTROL Aim – to minimise risk by: Removing known hazards Avoiding known hazard Putting in place workplace precautions E.g. guard around moving machinery parts, respirator, gloves etc. 22
23
5 STEPS TO RISK ASSESSMENT 1. LOOK AT HAZARDS 2. DECIDE WHO MAY BE HARMED AND HOW 3. EVALUATE RISKS - are existing precautions adequate? 4. RECORD YOUR FINDINGS 5. REVIEW from time to time & revise if necessary 23
24
HIERARCHY OF CONTROL 1. Remove the hazard Choose a safer alternative if possible If not, change process, change hazardous chemical, use safer form of chemical etc. 2. Minimise exposure to hazard e.g. use fume hood, enclose system/equipment, reduce number of people exposed/time of exposure 3. Provide training 4. Use PPE if hazard cannot be removed This should be a last resort, chosen appropriately and maintained/serviced 5. Use safety signs if hazard cannot be removed 24
25
PPE 25
26
RISK ASSESSMENT Must be done by law Does not have to be perfect but be ‘suitable and sufficient’. Employers must be able to show Proper checks for hazard were made People who may be harmed identified Significant hazards dealt with Reasonable precautions put in place Remaining risk low Employees involved in the process 26
27
The law says employers must do all that is ‘reasonably practicable’ to make the workplace safe. 27
28
28 Case Study 2 In your groups identify steps in making a risk assessment
29
29 Case Study 3 Compressed gas cylinders are often used in the work place Discuss the risk
