ELECTRIC CURRENT E Q: WHAT ARE THE 2 TYPES OF CURRENT AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM?
2
What is current? The rate at which charge passes a given point *Higher current= more charge passes the point each second.* Unit= ampere or amp (A) Current symbol is I
3
What are the 2 types of current? AC (alternating current) & DC (direct current)
4
Draw Figure 16 on pg. 282 *Be sure to describe AC and DC current in the yellow circles.*
5
Define Voltage. The amount of energy released as a charge moves between 2 points in a current *High Voltage=High Energy* Symbol= V Electrical outlets= 120 V
6
What is resistance? Opposition (goes against) to the flow of charge *As resistance increases, current decreases.* Symbol= R Unit= ohms
7
What is the resistance of conductors and insulators? Conductors= low resistance (electricity really flows) Insulators= high resistance (electricity doesn’t flow)
8
What is electric power? The rate at which electrical energy is used to do work Units= watt (W) Power= voltage x current Or P=V x I
9
Copy Power Ratings of Household Appliances chart on pg. 286
10
How do we calculate electrical energy? E= P x t Electrical energy= power x time
