1
Measured on a pH scale (0-14)
2
Is a compound that dissolves in water to form a solution with a pH lower than 7 Examples: Vinegar Lemon Juice Acid Rain
3
Is a compound that dissolves in water with a pH higher than 7 Example: Shampoo Household products
4
pH scale is a measure of acidity 0 being very acidic 14 being very basic. Every increase of 1 on the pH scale, is a increase of 10 times So a solution with a pH of 3 is 10 times more acidic than a solution with a pH of 4 A solution with a pH of 9 is 10 times more basic than a solution with a pH of 8
5
A pH of 7 means a solution is neutral -neither an acid nor a base
6
pH meters Consists of a probe attached to a meter Submerge the tip of the probe and the meter indicates the fluids pH
7
Acid-base indicators Substances that change colour when they are placed in solutions Blue litmus paper Turns red in an acid Red litmus paper Turns blue in a base Universal Indicators Change colour over a wide pH range Need to use a colour chart to compare
8
When an acid and a base mix, they neutralize and form a salt and water. HCl (aq) + NaOH (aq) ---------------- NaCl (aq) + H 2 O (aq) Acid BaseSalt Water
