1
Measurements Measurement is finding a number that shows the size or amount of something. We can measure many different things, but mostly we measure length, volume, mass, time and temperature.
2
Common Metric Prefixes
Symbol Factor Number Factor Word Kilo k 1,000 Thousand Hecto h 100 Hundred Deca da 10 Ten Deci d 0.1 Tenth Centi c 0.01 Hundredth Milli m 0.001 Thousandth
3
Length Length is measured in : Millimeters Centimeters Meters
Kilometers 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters 1 meter = 100 centimeters 1 kilometer = 1000 meters
4
In the United States (US) the length is measured in:
Inches Feet Yards Miles 1 inch= 2.54 cm 1 foot = 12 inches 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet = 63,360 inches 1 mile = km
5
Volume To measure the volume of liquids we use:
A kiloliter is 1000 liters A hectoliter is 100 liters A decaliter is 10 liters A liter is the basic unit of volume A deciliter is 1/10 liter A centiliter is 1/100 liter A milliliter is 1/1000 liter
6
Mass To measure mass we use grams (g). A tonne is 1000 kilograms
A kilogram is 1000 grams A hectogram is 100 grams A decagram is 10 grams A gram is the stem unit of mass A decigram is 1/10 gram A centigram is 1/100 gram A milligram is 1/1000 gram
7
Temperature There are 2 well known scales to measure temperature:
Celsius Fahrenheit To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit we can use a formula: (𝑥 𝐶 0 * 9 5 ) + 32 = y F⁰ 𝑥+𝑎 𝑛 = 𝑘=0 𝑛 𝑛 𝑘 𝑥 𝑘 𝑎 𝑛−𝑘
8
Time Time is measured in: Seconds Minutes ( 1 min = 60 sec)
Hours (1 h = 60 min) Days ( 1 day = 24 hours) Weeks ( 1 week = 7 days) Fortnight (1 fortnight = 2 weeks) Months ( 1 month = 28, 29, 30, 31 days) Years ( 1 year = 365 or 366 days) Decade ( 1 decade = 10 years) Century ( 1 century = 100 years) Millennium (1 millennium = 1000 years)
