1 Today’s Learning Targets  Today we will learn to understand experimental design by correctly defining the steps in the scientific method and identifying independent and dependent variables, constants, and control groups.

10 The Scientific Process  1. Pose a Question  Observing natural phenomena leads one to ask questions  2. Form a Hypothesis  Hypothesis: educated guess to answer the question  Written as an If … Then … statement What factors affect the flight your bird? If (describe what you changed), then (describe the effect). If I add weight to the wings then the plane will fly straighter.

12 Experimental Design  Variable:  any factor in an experiment What are the variables in our paper airplane experiment?

13 Experimental Design  Independent Variable (IV):  Factor of the experiment that was purposely changed or manipulated  Dependent Variable (DV):  Factor of the experiment that responded  Factor that is measured at the end of the experiment What did you change about your plane? How did we measure the plane’s flight? Independent Variable!!! Dependent Variable!!!

14 Experimental Design  Constants:  Factors that remained the same throughout the experiment  Control Group:  Does not receive the IV  Used to compare and detect any unknown factors What parts of your plane stayed the same throughout the experiment? Which plane was unchanged? Constants
