4 Asset-based working Assets are the strengths, skills, capacities and resources which enhance the capability of individuals and communities to sustain health and wellbeing. An asset approach involves refocusing from an approach based on the deficits that produce illness to an approach based on the factors that produce health. This includes how we describe, assess, evaluate and improve health through policy, practice and intelligence. Community assets are the assets that exist within a community that people within it say are important to everyone’s health and wellbeing. 4Community-centred approaches and health assets – workshop LGA /ADPH public health conference 2015

5 Why is it important to public health? 1.To understand what protects health and keeps people healthy. 2.To know how healthy our communities are, what health outcomes exist. 3.To engage people in positive, meaningful and motivating action on health. 4.To provide person-centred and community-centred interventions. 5.To empower and enable, increase sense of control and participation. 5Community-centred approaches and health assets – workshop LGA /ADPH public health conference 2015
