2 UTHSC Neuroscience Program ~10 students (M.S. program) ~40 students (Ph.D. program) 1 student (certificate program) ~55 faculty, 13 departments Faculty research interests: Cellular, molecular, developmental, genetic, systems, behavioral, neurological, and psychiatric approaches to the nervous system. Focus areas: synaptic function, learning and memory, neuronal aging/degeneration, and visual pathways.

4 Neuroscience Program Why do students apply to the M.S. and Certificate programs? 1.They want to go to graduate/professional school and have: A.Low test scores B.Poor undergraduate grades C.No research experience D.OR they are testing the graduate school waters 2. They want to enhance their current position: A.Elementary/secondary school science teachers B.Technicians want to move up (industry- bio, oil/gas) C.Physicians who want to perform research

6 Neuroscience Program Does the faculty “buy in” to the M.S. and Certificate programs? Yes. Why? 1.Chance to recruit “proven” Ph.D. students 2.Practical-its easier to forecast lab budgets for 2 years 3.Critical mass of students/gratifying to teach full classes 4. Revenue generation

7 Neuroscience Program Potential funding for graduate students: 1. Training Grants 2. Individual Fellowships 3. Mentor Sponsorship 4. Teaching Assistantships REALITY: M.S. Students either don’t get paid or are mentor sponsored
