BSW Field Practicum Overview

Welcome to Field Education Field Practicum is where real world social work happens! This is the place where you put your classroom knowledge into practice at an agency setting. Here are some activities you can expect from your Practicum Semester(s): Attend weekly Seminar classes with Field Director and peers Develop a Learning Plan that will map out your experiences and practice Work under the supervision of an BSW or MSW who will focus on your Learning Plan Be in the “Field” several hours a week depending on your educational plan Gain feedback weekly on your progress as an emerging social work professional

Examples of MSW Practicum Skills Advanced MSW Practicum Interventions with individuals, couples, families and groups Interventions including assessment, crisis intervention, brief and long term therapy. Deeper understanding of human behavior, addiction, family dynamics, relationships, and mental health, domestic violence, physical health. Administrative social work with government, not for profits organizations and/or communities. Problem and policy analysis, program design, plan services, evaluation of programs, and management. The BSW student may be exposed to and observe MSW level practice at their practicum, however BSW students will focus on Social Work Generalist Skills in the aforementioned slide. These are presented to show the comparison between the two levels.

Field Education Roles and Responsibilities Term:Definition: Field Director:Primary administrative responsibility for program planning and monitoring field practicums for all BSW and MSW students at Campbellsville, Somerset and Louisville. Coordination of BSW Field Instructors and MSW Field Liaisons. Maintenance, cultivation and evaluation of Partner Agency sites and personnel. The Field Director serves as the BSW Field Instructor for Campbellsville and Somerset. When needed, assists with placement issues. Field Supervisor:A social work practitioner with an MSW degree who has at least two years of social work practice experience. An individual who is employed by a Partner Agency and serves as the student’s field supervisor on a voluntary (unpaid) basis at the Placement. This individual is responsible for the education of the student(s) while the student(s) is at their agency.

Field Education Roles and Responsibilities Term:Definition: Partner Agency:An agency who meets the highest standards of providing a quality social work placement while ensuring students the opportunity to practice the NASW Core Competencies. A memorandum of agreement between the agency and the university outlays the specifics. Field Placement:A space or location at a Partner Agency where a student can learn under an MSW. Field Instructor:A faculty member or contracted community professional assigned to assist and guide students through out the practicum experience. Ensures the highest quality of practice skills and learning experiences in field practicum experience. A Field Liaison will be assigned to each MSW student at the beginning of the practicum experience.

Field Education Roles and Responsibilities Term:Definition: Offsite Supervisor:An approved experienced social worker (with an MSW degree) who serves in the place of a Field Supervisor with the Task Instructor to ensure that the requirements for social work supervision are met. The use of Offsite Field Supervisor has historically been significant in the development of non-traditional settings and allows for the use of the practicum site in the absence of an experienced of an MSW degreed practitioner in a potential or approved setting. Task Supervisor:An agency-based individual who does not hold a practice degree in social work (BSSW or MSW) but may be responsible for social work related activities at the agency. This individual would fulfill a secondary role to be responsible for learning objectives, evaluations, and overseeing other activities related to student field experience. For example, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) at a mental health agency could provide task instruction but could not be a field instructor.

Student Responsibilities 1.Adheres to the Social Work Code of Ethics 2.Follows Pre-Placement instructions in a timely fashion specifically, Malpractice, NASW Membership and Data Sheet submission. 3.Assumes responsibility for completing hours 4.Assumes responsibility for uploading assignments and required documents on time 5.Adheres to the Policies and Procedures of the Partner Agency (Dress Code, Background Checks, Holidays) 6.Assumes responsibility for sharing information with the Field Supervisor and/or Field Instructor 7.Advocates for self in meeting with Supervisor weekly and fulfilling Learning Plan activities

Field Instructor Responsibilities 1.Meets with student and Field Supervisor to ensure student is meeting Learning Plan activities 2.Serves as a consultant to the Field Supervisor in evaluation of student 3.Serves as a communication link between the Supervisor and Field Director regarding student progress 4.Serves a problem solver regarding practicum issues 5.Clarifies and reinforces Practicum Roles and Responsibilities 6.Assist the Student with developing Learning Plan Activities and Objectives 7.Identifies issues and works toward resolving placement issues 8.Provides feedback to the Field Director regarding Partner Agency

Field Supervisor Responsibility Must have a BSW or MSW and two years post degree experience in the social work field Meet with the student for a Pre-Practicum Interview and provide agency information to prepare the student such as dress code, background checks, TB skin tests or other agency policies. Be familiar with the Field Education Syllabus, Field Calendar, and NASW Core Competencies Assist students in creating a Learning Plan and provide students with a wide range of field learning opportunities at the Partner Agency. Help students become familiar with the Partner Agency and the clients the agency serves. Meet with the student for one hour, one time per week Sign off on Learning Plan and Timesheets Assist in evaluating the student at mid term and end of the semester. Recommend a grade for the student. Communicate with the Field Director/Instructor at least two times a semester. Encourage a positive learning environment for student learning and skill practice. Act as a primary role model for professional practice.

Preparing for Practicum Social work is a rewarding career, but like many professions, it has its risks in today’s litigious society. Social workers have increasingly been subject to malpractice suits. The Membership and Insurance is the first step as a part of preparing for your practicum. Steps to Securing a Placement Identify the type of agency you would like to experience. Make contact with an agency. More than one interview is always a good idea! Meet in person to discuss questions you have about the practicum placement If they agree to accept you as a student, Have the Agency sign the Agency Partner and Memorandum of Agreement Documents Complete the Practicum Data Form, Upload Agency Partner and Memorandum of Agreement Documents

Finding a Practicum Placement What type of agency or population would you like to work with? What are your career goals? What population would you like to learn more about? What types of agencies are in your area? Will you be moving back to your home town or elsewhere to do your Practicum? Do some research on social service agencies in your interest area. For Assistance in identifying placement, review the Listing of Partner Agencies on the Field Education Website. Communicating with Agencies Your next steps Contact a couple of different social service agencies Let the agency know your name and you are a student from Campbellsville University Ask if they are accepting practicum students If they are accepting BSW students and have a BSW or MSW on staff that can supervise you Ask to make an appointment to visit the agency and the person who would be supervising you to discuss the placement specifics Dress professionally as if you were going on a job interview Be on time Be respectful and courteous Bring your questions and take notes Thank the person for their time Use this list of questions on the next slide to help you through the process.

Suggested Questions for Agency Interview What are the programs and services that the agency provides? How are clients referred to the agency? What population does the agency serve? Is there diversity within the population (gender, age, race, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, etc.)? How many people work for the agency? What are the disciplines of the staff members (social workers, counselors, psychologists, teachers, nurses, psychiatrists, paraprofessionals, etc.)? Are there other staff members that I would primarily be working with and would it be possible to meet them? How would you describe your organizational culture? How do you address the issue of staff safety? What do see as the benefits of having a student at this agency? How can I be helpful? What qualities are you looking for in a student? What are some of the learning activities that a student might be assigned? What would a typical day be like for student? What hours do you expect a student to work? Are evenings and weekend hours possible? What kind of agency orientation will be planned for a student? Does the agency require students to have criminal background checks or immunizations prior to placement? What kind of agency orientation will be planned for the student? How would you describe your supervisory style and what would supervision look like here? What is the dress code here? Is parking available? Would I have a workspace here with a desk, phone, and computer? Would it be possible to tour the agency today? What are the next steps in deciding if I am a good fit for this placement? Required Steps for a Successful Practicum Upload your Safety Checklist by Week 3 Submit your Learning Plan by Week 5 Submit Mid Term and Final Evaluation according to Syllabus schedule Attend Field Seminar The Field Instructor/Director will meet with Supervisor and Student at midterm and final evaluation. Communicate with Supervisor and Instructor Complete a draft of your Learning Plan with your Field Supervisor Continually monitor your Learning Plan activities and progress with your Supervisor at weekly meetings for 1 hour. Learning Plans and Evaluations: The Field Learning Plan is a collaborative effort between the student and practicum supervisor. There should be at least two to three (2-3) learning activities written to encompass each core competency. A learning activity may address more than one competency. Learning activities should be written using complete sentences, identify social work skills as a primary focus, and use a SMART formula S=Specific, M=Measurable, A=Action-oriented, R=Realistic, T=Time-restricted/limited. Students should use the Learning Plan as a tool to measure a student’s progress throughout the practicum. It is recommended for students to retain a copy of the document for planning purposes.

Safety Checklist, Timesheets and Journals Upon beginning your practicum, you will go over the Safety Checklist with your Field Supervisor. This is done to help ensure that you are safe while working in the field. Safety Checklist will be provided in class. Weekly timesheets and journals will be due weekly to document your time and allow you to process what you are learning in field.

Resolving Problems in BSW Placement Unethical, Illegal or Personal Safety Violation Problem Arises Student at Agency Student at Partner Agency Student and Field Supervisor or Field Instructor/Director discuss concerns and resolve Field Director notified immediately If Agency: Student removal, new placement found Student, Field Supervisor and Field Instructor/Director meet to correct issue. If Student: Student removal

Resolving Problems in BSW Placement Students are expected to complete their field placement at their assigned agency. This is a commitment. All requests for changes must follow the aforementioned protocol. Changes are only made in extreme cases and highly discouraged.
