Engineering Day 2 February 26, 2016
2
We already know that… Engineers think outside the box to solve real-world problems in innovative ways and… find many unconventional uses for every day materials.
3
Weak Materials = Strong Structures Sometimes the materials alone may be weak but when certain design elements are applied, they become strong! These students in China designed this bridge made solely from paper!
4
Super Hero Strength One of the most famous super heroes of all time is the Incredible Hulk. His superhuman strength allows him to do things that normal men could not do!
5
Your Challenge Today you will work your group to create a “Hulk-Strong Chair” from only newspaper and tape. Your group will devise a plan, build your chair according to the plan using the materials given to you, and test your design by stacking books on your chair until it collapses. If time allows, you will modify your chair to see if it can hold even more books!
6
Kindergarten and 1 st Your group will be given 25 sheets of newspaper and a roll of tape. Your chair must be free-standing. This means it cannot be taped to the floor, chair, or any other surface. The seat of your chair must be at least 8 inches from the floor.
7
2 nd and 3 rd Your group will be given 20 sheets of newspaper and a roll of tape. Your chair must be free-standing. This means it cannot be taped to the floor, chair, or any other surface. The seat of your chair must be at least 10 inches from the floor.
8
4 th and 5 th Your group will be given 15 sheets of newspaper and a roll of tape. Your chair must be free-standing. This means it cannot be taped to the floor, chair, or any other surface. The seat of your chair must be at least 12 inches from the floor.
9
Writing Reflection Kindergarten Draw a picture of your group’s chair design and write about how you designed your chair. 1 st Grade Write about how your group used the materials to create your design and a problem your group had to solve. 2 nd Grade Write about how your group worked as a team to plan and build your chair. Describe what it takes to be a successful team.
10
Writing Reflection 3 rd Grade Write a reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of your group’s design. Explain how you worked together to modify your design. 4 th Grade Write a reflection about how your design evolved throughout the planning and building process. Explain how your group used effective teamwork strategies to solve problems.
11
Writing Reflection 5 th Grade Write a reflection on how your group worked during each phase of the design process. Include how you used prior knowledge of design elements during the planning phase, effective communication strategies during the building phase, keen observations during the testing phase, and problem- solving skills during the modification phase.
