UNIFYING THEORY OF PLATE TECTONICS By: Gilberto E. Trevino & Dorien Gray
2
Plate tectonics describe how the earth's plates move around. This movement affects subduction, sea floor spreading, volcanic activity, mountain building, and other geological features.
3
ALL OF THE CONTINENTS WERE ONE…
4
The continents move at the same rate as our finger nails grow. That rate is 3 millimeters a month.
5
PLATE TECTONICS MOVE BECAUSE THEY ARE FLOATING ON TOP OF LIQUID MANTLE AND THE MANTLE MOVES BECAUSE OF CONVECTION CURRENTS.
6
ALFRED WEGENER PUBLISHED THE THEORY OF CONTINENTAL DRIFT.
7
PANGAEA 200-250 million years ago a super continent called Pangaea existed. Over time the plate tectonics caused it to separate, forming our continents today.
8
Pangaea is “all of earth” in Latin and was named by Alfred Wegener in 1915. Researchers believe that one day the continents America and Asia will come back together and form a supercontinent called Amasia.
