Muraoka (muraoka@green.gifu-u.ac.jp) Phenology is the fundamental phenomena of biological activities in ecosystems and is also influencial to ecosystem functions. Recent and future climate change would be reflected in phenology of organisms, biological interactions and ecosystem functions, and therefore it is the key aspect in long-term ecological studies. We propose to link the phenological observations over LTER sites in countries, regions and the world. In -situ observation network would then be linked with Earth observation initiatives and networks. In Japan we have established “Phenological Eyes Network (PEN)” in 2003, and it works to link observation networks (JaLTER, JapanFlux, J-BON )and institutes (JAXA, JAMSTEC). www.pheno-eye.org Recommendation : “Phenology” networks in ILTER Existing local phenomena/data need to be examined together, along the environmental gradients and changes, by builing multidisciplinary and cross-scale networks. (1)General and easy-to-build observation by cameras. (2)Canopy-level optical property and camera information gained on canopy towers to link with satellite remote sensing and/or forest CO 2 flux. (3)Leaf-canopy-landscape level observations to explore remote sensing of biodiversity and ecosystem functions.
