3. Mineral Facts There are over 2000 minerals on Earth, but only 100 are commonly found. 30 minerals make up the majority of the rocks on Earth.

4. What makes up minerals? Elements ◦Pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.

5. What are elements? All minerals contain one or more of the 92 elements present in the Earth’s crust.

6. Element Facts There are 92 naturally occurring elements on earth but only 8 elements make over 98% of the minerals on the Earth's crust.

7. What are elements made of ? Atoms ◦The smallest part of an element.

8. Most minerals are made of more than one element. Compounds ◦A substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically joined. Water – H 2 O
