1 Apollo 20 Initiative Houston Independent School District Paula Harris Board of Education President Alicia Thomas, Ph.D. Deputy Chief Academic Officer

2 Apollo 20 Overview Began in 2010-2011 with nine persistently low-performing secondary schools (four high schools and five middle schools) Expanded to include 11 persistently low-performing elementary schools during 2011-2012 Nearly 13,500 students attend the 20 schools Turn-around strategies based on research from Dr. Roland Fryer, EdLabs at Harvard University, of successful charter schools A three-year pilot aimed at closing the achievement gap The three-year cost for the program is approximately $60 million. HISD, in partnership with its foundation, has raised approximately $13 million with $6 million more to be raised in private funds to support the implementation of Apollo 20.

4 Apollo 20 Results HISD replaced 18 of the 20 Apollo 20 principals and reconstituted at least 50% of the teachers. Overall, the gains in the passing rate of students on the state standardized test across the 9 secondary schools in math and science out-paced the average district gain. The percentage of students scoring at the college-readiness indicator level in math (“commended”) increased by six percentage points from the prior year 1:2 tutoring of students at the 6 th and 9 th grades resulted in significant gains on state standardized tests. Student attendance rates were higher by at least.5 percentage points in 7 of the 9 secondary schools. 98% of all of the graduating seniors were accepted to a 2- or 4-year college or university.
