Women had taken up jobs as part of Total War practice during WWI. Soldiers returned home to find women with many new expectations of equality.

Over 350,000 African American soldiers served in segregated units during WWI. Many saw action alongside French Units. 171 African American soldiers were awarded the French Legion of Honor
