2. ◦ Learning Target: We will identify different points of view of political parties and interest groups on important Texas issues, past and present. ◦ Language Objective: We will read about the issues the President hopefuls are talking about. ◦ Success Criteria: I will pass a quiz over the different lessons on government this week.

Two Party System ◦ Republican Party : believes that the government’s role is to enable the people to secure the benefits of society for themselves, their families, and for those who are unable to do so for themselves. ◦ Democratic Party: believe that US is greater together than by their self. Country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same rules.

4. Problems Today ◦ In your notebook list five problems the U.S. faces today. ◦ Get in a group of 4 and discuss the problems you wrote down ◦ Rate the problems from “Major Problem” to “Minor Problem” ◦ Top “Major Problems” will be listed on the board

5. Fixing the Problem ◦ As a class we will discuss: ◦ Who is involved in solving the problem? ◦ Who might offer solutions? ◦ What would the solutions be? ◦ Who determines which solution will be used?
