4 1. The verb “saber” means “to know”. 2. We use “saber” when we are talking about knowing a fact or knowing how to do something. 1. I know the answer. Yo sé la respuesta. Yo sé la respuesta. 2. She knows who the president of the United States is. Ella sabe quien es el presidente de los Estados Unidos. Ella sabe quien es el presidente de los Estados Unidos. 3. These are some examples of how we would use “saber” in the English language. 1. When expressing know how to do something. You don’t need the word “how” in Spanish. It is simply implied. 1. We know how to ride a bike.“Sabemos montar una bicicleta.” 2. They know how to ski.“Ellos saben esquiar.” 3. Mr. DeVore knows how to speak Spanish.“El Señor DeVore sabe hablar español.” 4. I don’t know how to dance well.“No sé bailar bien.”

6 1. The verb “conocer” means “to know (a person), to meet or to be familiar with something”. 2. We use “conocer” when we are talking about knowing a person. 1. I know you! íTe conozco! íTe conozco! 2. She knows the president of the United States. (personally) Ella conoce al presidente de los Estados Unidos. These are some examples of how we would use “conocer” in the English language.

7 1. Since “conocer” is often used with people it is good to bring up personal “a”. 2. We use “conocer” to meet people and to know someone personally. 3. Whenever the a noun is a proper noun, meaning it has a specific name, we always put what is called (personal “a”) before the name if its an object pronoun. It implies that the person is an indirect object pronoun and most of the time, people are considered indirect object pronouns. 1. ¿Conoces a Juan bien?Do you know John well? 2. ¿Conoces a Nueva York?Are you familiar with New York? 3. Ella no conoce a Jorge.She doesn’t know George. 4. No conozco a Raimundo.I don’t know Ray.
