1
Chemical Properties A chemical property is any ability to produce a change in the composition of matter The ability to burn is a chemical property Chemical properties can be observed only when the substances in a sample of matter are changing into different substances
2
Chemical Properties Flammability -Is the material’s ability to burn in the presence of oxygen -Sometimes this is not a desirable property -EX’ –Children’s sleepwear fabric must be made from low flammability material
3
Chemical Properties Reactivity -The property that describes how readily a substance combines chemically with other substances is reactivity -Oxygen highly reactive element
4
Recognizing Chemical Changes Chemical change -Occurs when a substance reacts and forms one or more new substances -EX:
5
Recognizing Chemical Changes There are 3 common types of evidence for a chemical change -Change in color -Production of gas -Formation of a precipitate
6
Recognizing Chemical Changes Change in Color -Is a clue that a chemical change has produced at least one new substance
7
Recognizing Chemical Changes Production of a gas -EX: When you mix vinegar with baking soda, bubbles of carbon dioxide form immediately
8
Recognizing Chemical Changes Formation of a Precipitate -Another chemical change that is common to most people is the curdling of milk -Any solid that forms and separates from a liquid mixture is called a precipitate
9
Is a Change Chemical or Physical? Not always easy to distinguish from the two Even if you observe a color change, a gas, or a precipitate, you cannot be sure that a chemical change has taken place -EX: -Water boiling, the bubbles of gas that rise to the surface are still water
10
Is a Change Chemical or Physical? Another example -When you heat up an iron horse shoe the color changes from grey to red, despite the change in color, the iron is still iron
11
Is a Change Chemical or Physical? Before you can decide if a chemical change has occurred, you must first ask yourself this question -Are different substances present after the change takes place -If not, then the change is physical, not chemical
12
Is a Change Chemical or Physical? When matter undergoes a chemical change, the composition of the matter changes When matter undergoes a physical change, the composition of the matter remains the same
