3 #1 Question: Why do we use the year 1500 as a stopping point? Answer: Afroeurasia became permanently connected to the Americas from this time on.

4 #2 Question: What was the “Columbian Exchange?” Answer: The transfer of goods & ideas between Afroeurasia & the Americas as a result of Columbus & other explorers

5 Random note… “Columbian” spelled with a u So are Christopher Columbus & most things named for him – Columbus, OH / Columbia, SC One exception is the South American nation of Colombia

6 #3 Question: in what ways was the Columbian Exchange intentional? Answer: exploration, trade of plants/animals/spices, religious missionary work

7 #4 Question: in what ways was the Columbian Exchange unintentional? Answer: trade spreads culture, contact spreads undesirable plants/animals/diseases

8 #5 Question: why do we refer to Afroeurasia as the “Old World” & Americas as the “New World?” Answer: – People in Americas pre-1492 BUT explorers like Vespucci considered it ‘new’

15 Find a Partner! Leave notes in your notebook Tear out a new sheet of paper – One paper per group is fine – Put both/all names at the top – This will be turned in/graded

16 Back Side #1 Think of a favorite food that has at least seven ingredients (more than seven is great) Write out a list of ingredients to make your dish (you do not need to write out instructions)

18 Back Side #2 List the specific plant/animal needed to make an ingredient For instance, these things do not naturally occur in nature: bread, tortillas, butter, cheese, sour cream, noodles, buns

19 Back Side #3 For each ingredient in your recipe, label OLD or NEW World Use the handout to guide you If you need an item not on the handout, let Mr. Claus know

20 Back Side #4 Assess whether it would have been possible to make your recipe before 1492 Explain why or why not Answer in 1-2 sentences

21 Back Side #5 If your dish was impossible pre-1492, what recipe changes would’ve made it possible? – Using a different grain or meat? – Using another animal’s milk? Answer in 1-2 sentences

22 When you’re finished… Make sure that both/all names are on your assignment Turn in to the trays Put the reference handouts on the stool in front of the room HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!
