PARCC ITEM TYPES: EBSR Evidence Based Selected Response (EBSR) Combines traditional selected response questions with a second selected response question that asks students to show evidence from the text that supports the answer in the previous question. If Part A is correct but Part B is not, then the student will get half credit for the question. If Part A is incorrect but Part B is correct, the student will receive NO credit. 11
12
EVIDENCE BASED SELECTED RESPONSE (EBSR) Read the following excerpt from “Boy’s Life” by Robert McCammon. Answer the questions that follow. Paragraph 28: My heart was a frog leaping out of murky water into clear sunlight. I said, “Thanks!” and I ran for the door. Before I got out, though, I looked back at Mrs. Neville. She sat at a desk with no papers on it that needed grading, no books holding lessons that needed to be taught…Mrs. Neville stared out at the room of empty desks, carved with the initials of generations who had passed through this place like a tide rolling into the future. Mrs. Neville suddenly looked awfully old. Paragraph 29: “Have a good summer, Mrs. Neville!” I told her from the doorway. Paragraph 30: “Goodbye,” she said, and she smiled. Paragraph 31: I ran out along the corridor, my arms unencumbered by books, my mind unencumbered by facts and figures, quotations and dates. I ran out into the golden sunlight, and my summer had begun… 12
13
Part A: Read the sentence from paragraph 31 in the passage from Boy’s Life. I ran out along the corridor, my arms unencumbered by books, my mind unencumbered by facts and figures, quotations and dates. What does the word unencumbered mean as it is used in the sentence? a) Not burdened b) Not excited c) Not hurried d) Not aged 13 Part B: Which sentence from the passage best supports the answer to Part A? a)“Have a good summer,” Mrs. Neville said, and I realized suddenly that I was free.” b)“Before I got out, though, I looked back at Mrs. Neville.” c)“Mrs. Neville suddenly looked awfully old.” d)“Have a good summer, Mrs. Neville!” I told her from the doorway. Evidence Based Selected Response (EBSR)

Technology Enhanced Constructed Response (TECR) Uses technology to capture student comprehension of texts in authentic ways that have been difficult to score by machine for large scale assessments (drag & drop, cut & paste, shade text, move items to show relationships). 14
15
15 Technology Enhanced Constructed Response (TECR) A ccording to the article “The biography of Amelia Earhart,” which events had the most significant impact on Earhart's life? Fro m the list, create a summary by dragging the four most significant events and dropping them in chronological order into the table. 1Earhart becomes the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean by herself. 2Earhart attends a finishing school in Philadelphia. 3Earhart purchases her first plane. 4Earhart works as a nurse’s aide in Canada. 5Earhart attends an air show, where a stunt pilot flies close to her. 6Earhart sets off on a flight around the world. 7Earhart places third at the Cleveland Women’s Air Derby. These items will be essays that measure students’ understanding of texts through written expression. Language conventions will also be measured. The Performance Based Assessment (PBA) will contain three of these items. 17
17 PARCC TASKS TYPES: Narrative Task (60 Min) Students will read a fictional text. Then, they answer questions (EBSR & TECR) & write a story (PCR). Literary Analysis Task (75 Min) Students need to read complex text closely and interact with two texts of high literary value, rich in theme, symbolism, and literary devices. They will answer questions (EBSR & TECR) & compose an analytic essay (PCR). Research Simulation Task (90 Min) Students will analyze an informational topic presented through several articles or multi- media stimuli, the first text being an anchor text that introduces the topic. Students will engage with the texts by answering a series of questions and synthesizing information from multiple sources in order to write an analytic essay (PCR).
