Murmured (verb) Mumbled quietly or make low continuous sounds. I murmured to my mother after she yelled at me. My voice was so low I could not be heard. A= clear S= mutter

Relent (verb) To give in, give up, or let up. I finally had to relent to my father. After 10 minutes of arguing I finally gave into him. A= build S= give in

Terse (adj.) To be brief, or to the point; said in few words. I was very terse when reading my homework assignment. I did not read everything I wrote; I was very brief. A= lengthy S= abrupt

Diminish (noun) Become less or smaller; cause to be smaller or littler. I was diminishing my lolly-pop very quickly. It was getting smaller and smaller by the minute. A= increase S= drain

Destination (noun) A place one wants to go to; a goal My destination in life, my goal, is to always have high grades on my report card in order to get into a good college. A= start S= target

Mercantile (adj.) Concerning business or marketing. I always act mercantile when it comes to business. I am always concerned about how things are going and what the sales are. A= noncommercial S= economic

Tactic (noun) A strategic plan to get something done I am very tactic when it comes to getting my homework done on time. I always and prepared and have a plan. A= mayhem S= ploy

Scowled (verb) Frowned with disapproval I scowled at my mother after she told me to sit down and do my math homework. I an angry face. A= smile S= flare

Wavered (verb) Hesitated; to go back and forth on something; be indecisive. I wavered on my math test. I kept going back to questions thinking they were wrong, when they were right. A= accept S= hesitate

Envisioned (verb) Pictured in your mind I love to envision pictures in my mind when I am reading books. It is very interesting to picture my own scenes in my mind as I read. A= none S= visualize

Malevolent (adj.) Evil or Hateful I am very malevolent towards people who are mean to me, and who are mean to others. A= harmless S= hateful

Splotched (verb) Marked down sloppily Don’t buy that material; it splotches easily. It is covered in stains. A= none S= brand

Aesthetic (adj.) Relating to beauty or the appreciation of beauty; pleasing in appearance. I had an aesthetic day when I went with my mother to her favorite art museum. It was beautiful. A= displeasing S= artful

Anachronism (noun) Something out of its proper chronological order. A telephone in the 1700’s would have been way out of place, since it was invented during this time period. A= chronological order S= chronological error

Beleaguered (adj.) beset with troubles or problems; surrounded by troops. 8 th grade students often feel beleaguered by all the SOLs they must take. S= beset

Caprice (noun) An impulsive change of mind Often some teenagers show caprice often when they can’t decide and often change their minds. A= constant S= change

Ebullient (adj.) Zestfully enthusiastic My aunt is very ebullient when it comes to her dance class. She loves to dance and is always enthusiastic about it. A= disinterested S= bouncy/ enthusiastic

Echelon (noun) A level or responsibility or authority in a hierarchy; a rank I hold a higher echelon in my family as the eldest when it comes to watching my brother when my parents are away. I am very responsible. A= childish S= rank
