After his first marriage ended in divorce, he remarried and settled comfortably in London, England.

3. Interesting Facts: When he was younger, he became dangerously ill with scarlet fever. He worked at a bank while he wrote poetry. You have to pay the bills somehow! Poems: The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, 1915 The Waste Land,1922 Ash Wednesday, 1930 Honors: Known as one of the most influential poets of the Avant Garde movement. In 1948, Eliot received the Nobel Prize for literature during a fellowship stay at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study.

4. Miss Helen Slingsby was my maiden aunt, And lived in a small house near a fashionable square Cared for by servants to the number of four. Now when she died there was silence in heaven And silence at her end of the street. The shutters were drawn and the undertaker wiped his feet — He was aware that this sort of thing had occurred before. The dogs were handsomely provided for, But shortly afterwards the parrot died too. The Dresden clock continued ticking on the mantelpiece, And the footman sat upon the dining-table Holding the second housemaid on his knees — Who had always been so careful while her mistress lived. Personification- Heaven is giving the human quality of silence. Imagery- A clear image of the house after the death is described. Symbolism- The parrot dying could be a symbol of Miss Helen’s death. Effect: All of these literary devices create a clear picture for the viewer of the scene. The devices also emphasis the death of Miss Helen Slingsby, and the effects of her passing. Favorite line: I liked this line because it is a happier image. The footman is spending time with the housemaid, which was something they could not do while Miss Helen was alive. In the end, her death was not completely a bad event.

5. I did not know who T.S. Eliot was before this class, but I found his life and poetry very interesting. He deals with some tough subjects, such as death, but in a way the reader can relate to. Likes I like how Eliot’s poems are full of emotion. He does a good job conveying feelings to the reader. Dislikes Some of Eliot’s poems are very difficult to understand. He uses some very intense and sophisticated language.
