North Korea is backed by the USSR and they armed the NK army. North Korea also borders a communist China. South Korea is backed by the U.S. After WWII, Korea is divided into two nations

The landing at Inchon was a very risky move. Inchon has strange tides, that move in and out quickly and could leave the invasion fleet stranded in mud flats.

After the success of the Inchon landing, UN troops break out of the Pusan Perimeter and quickly pushed the NK army out of the South. MacArthur is allowed to pursue the fleeing North Korean army as long as it doesn’t antagonize China.

MacArthur returns home to a huge welcome parade, addresses joint-session of Congress, is briefly considered for President

Ike, critical of Truman’s handling of Korea, is challenged to “come up with an alternate plan.” Ike responds that once he’s elected, he will go to Korea.

The fighting eventually stalemates at the 38th Parallel. (right back to where it was before the war began)

Permanent increase in the military budget –Creates a permanent “military- industrial” complex. –Alliance of the military, industrial and scientific communities. –The fear is that this “complex” will affect American Policy.

The Korean War “ends” with a truce. An armistice was signed on July 27, 1953. The armistice was only meant as a temporary measure and provided for: 1.A suspension of open hostilities. 2.A fixed buffer zone (the DMZ) 3.Transfer of POWs
