2. Early Life Ruth was born in Virginia. Virginia is where Belle Prater’s Boy takes place. She was born on March 15, 1942. Ruth grew up in a family that was poor. She got her education at badly resourced country schools. Her father died when she was six years old.he died in a brawl.

3. Early Life (Continuation) When she was eight her family moved to Michigan. Later she returned to Grundy High School to finish. When she was growing up her parents loved literature. She once lived with her aunt and uncle. She knew she wanted to be a writer early on.

4. Fun Facts She now lives in Pennsylvania. She lived in Virginia Beach for a while. She has been a teacher, and school librarian. Her father was a coal miner. When she was younger she had family read alouds almost every day. She is 73 years old.
